No BS Book Reviews
“This book was simply perfection in my eyes. There is such a magical quality about the story with the whole carnival aspect, but also with the writing. It’s beautifully pieced together, well researched and I highlighted like a madwoman. When I read I look for something that’s going to make me emotional, whether that’s happy, angry, devastated, terrified, you name it, I want to feel it. And I did here. My emotions were all over the place and I loved every heart wrenching moment of it.”

Sassymum Book Blog
“The is the first book of Jane Berrick-Harvey I have read and certainly look forward to reading her other word. This book had such an emotional not so perfect love story between Kestrel (Kes) the "Carnie" and Annie - your everyday Suburban girl from a small town.

I was ordinary. Nice.

He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice.

Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t."

Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path.

Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough...

The Traveling Man The Traveling Series #1 edition by Jane HarveyBerrick Literature Fiction eBooks

I have read several books by this author, and she is amazing; her plots are always well thought out, and her characters are unique and real, and this one was no different. I loved the first half of this read, when Aimee and Kes were building their bond and the precious connection they had as children. But the emotion, turmoil, misunderstandings and angst that followed was too much for me and almost overshadowed the relationship between our two main characters. There were times that I felt that Aimee was more immature and childish than Kes, but I know that love can make us do crazy, childish things. Kes has a hard time verbalizing his feelings, and not knowing more of his background and pain, it's hard to know where all his issues stem from, but it is easy to see why he is broken. I invested so much in this story, that the ending just left me deflated. Yes, it knew that this is a serial read, but I was emotionally drained and frustrated. I have no idea how this will all play out, but I need to try and capture those precious childhood ideals that made me fall in love with the youthful Aimee and Kes, because the adult versions have me feeling a bit apathetic and annoyed. I hope that part 2 will help me recapture the "magic" of the carnie and the couple who initially captured my heart.

WOW this book is brilliant. I wish I could give it 10 Stars.

Jane has proven once again what a great author she is with this story. You name it; this book has it, empathy, laughter, love, angst and the right amount of drama. The story is so well written in this book that I guarantee you will not be able to put it down.

The characters, Kes and Aimee feel so real that you follow along in a somewhat dream like quality feeling as if you are right there with them, going through everything they are and it was a joy, privilege and pleasure to read this ARC.

The first part of the story concentrates on these characters as children and watch how they interact as they grow up. Instantly becoming close friends who only see each other each year when the Carnival comes to town.

Aimee who has never seen a Carnival before is ecstatic at being allowed to see the show for her 10th birthday. The excitement that she has comes out so well in this book, you find yourself feeling exactly not only for her but with her. “To me, the carnival promised a world of magic. I’d never been anywhere in my life, never even left Minnesota. But carnie people, they had homes with wheels and could go wherever they wanted. They weren’t stuck in a small town, dreaming of the world beyond” I found myself wishing I was 10 again and experiencing the excitement she had watching the Carnival come to town

Aimee’s family are not a very affectionate family, her father is quite a controlling man, her mother basically a door mouse who would never said anything wrong or put a foot wrong and her sister, older but dying to be on her own and live her own life. Aimee, however, longs for adventure.
Kes, I feel in love with him, even as a small boy he has charisma and is a daredevil in his own right, learning new tricks, showing how much he loves this life, but he has his own battles. Suffering profoundly with server Dyslexia, struggling to read and although Aimee tries to help him with it whenever he is in her town, it is a hard struggle.

There is no doubt the bond between these two is like no other, they encourage, support and guide each other but with the constant separation things take a turn for the worst, their friendship and relationship is soon tested in ways neither of them would want. It is not until we get to Part 2 of this story that we see more of the world of Kes and Aimee

In part 2 some time has passed and we see two different people, with history and pasts, but when they do finally meet up, you cannot help but realise the connection these two have is still there, however, Aimee has a career, Kes has the carnival so what can they do. “I’d never stopped loving him, but I was beginning to wish that I could”.

Aimee decides that she will spend some time with the carnival and Kes and see what the life on the road is like; still trying to reconnect the friendship she has with him. Yes there are obstacle’s in the way, yes there are arguments but who doesn’t have these things to deal with. “Part of me didn’t want to fall for Kes again he was too difficult, too dangerous, too unrestrained and wild. Since that summer, I’d looked for safe; appreciated it. What the hell was I doing here”?

As time passes by in the summer the more aware of the clock moving on and time slipping past them they become, what will they do at the end of the summer, will they stay together or will Aimee go back to her safe job, will Kes give up the carnival, only time will tell…. “Kes and I were running out of time again, and I hated it. All the old feelings came rushing back; that horrible sensation of not being in control of my life. It was stand standing at the edge of a cliff, your vision blurring, because the ground is rushing towards you”

Yes this is a book with a cliff-hanger but it is a book you will not want to put down but pick up again and again to see if you have missed parts.

The author has already informed us that the second book will be out soon, hopefully April so watch this space.
What happen when your heart and your head telling you different things?

love made no sense. It was cold and hard and didn't care how much it hurt you.

By the first few pages, I was hooked. The story took you on a magical ride and I felt like I lost in the carnival and on the front seat of a roller coaster ride.

"And you're at a crossroads. You're wondering which way to go - towards safety, or towards love."

From the moment Aimee met Kes she knew loving him won't be easy. He's too difficult, too dangerous, too unrestrained and wild. But often our heart won over our head.

The story makes you follow their journey from childhood into adulthood where life throws them a lot of twist and turn. Their relationship wasn't smooth sailing. Too many obstacles and how different their world apart. So when life offers second chance what would you do?

The struggles and emotions of Aimee and Kes's love makes you torn.

love isn't enough

It's been a while since if felt this way about a story. Jane's writing makes you really feels all the emotions and open your eyes to carnival life. It's a story that truly conflicted you between going what your heart feels and what your head tells you. Jane is amazingly playing with all your emotion all over this one. And just like that it's not just a simple love story.

The last time I felt this way when she successfully make me disregards all the things I would normally hate in a book and ended up loving the education of Sebastian and Caroline.

I can't recommend this book enough and can't wait for the sequel and see where she will takes us with the Kes and Aimee's journey.

I love! Love! Love this so hard.

5 magical stars and beyond!!
