The Hanging Murders is a good first novel. The story keeps you guessing with multiple characters who float around California in the 1950s. But who knew there was so much sex back then? Happily Rex Carothers did and was willing to share it with the reader. His knowledge of the inside workings of detective work is interesting. Obviously the author's a keen observer of the human condition. This book certainly lends itself to a sequel and readers can eagerly anticipate the next effort.Product details

Rex Crothers nails it on this murder mystery! This is my first time reading his books and I can't wait for the next adventure. This book has so many twists and turns, Sheriff Jim Cobb comes to life on the pages in this suspenseful thriller. I did not figure it out until the very end and I love it that way.
I loved the story once I got through the first several chapters of too much detail of the characters.,Then the story had me captivated.Looking forward to the second book.
I chose 4 stars because the overall plot is good. Being a new author, I'm hoping to encourage more books. Anyone wanting to read a new author with a believable sequence of characters and events, should enjoy this book. Closer attention to grammatical phrasing, proof reading and sentence structure would improve read. Some wording left me 'hanging' for more of the anticipated information. All in all, I'll be watching for book 2 and 1940 p/u.

There are so many twists to the story as there are characters, will you get to know which one is the hanging murderer?
A great first book for this series. Murders and sex galore. This gritty story of serial murders and sex presented in the 1950s, kept me reading. It could have used another good edit as there were a few errors throughout the book, but they didn't detract from the story and the well developed characters. The switch from third person to first person threw me a little bit, but I got used to it. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended.
The Hanging Murders I’ve always loved ‘film noir’ and now to read a book written about the time-the 1950s. At last, an author who can write murder/mystery and place it all in California of 1957. Rex Carothers keeps you guessing up to the end and weaving a plot filled with characters who belong on a movie screen. The use of how people felt about, not only, other whites, but Hispanics, gays, and illicit love affairs. The fabric is rich with nuances of individuals behavior. I loved this book from beginning to end, when is the next episode?
The Hanging Murders has something for everyone betrayal; a hero who redeems himself; a murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the end; and lots of hot, easy sex -- often with Latina's. Think J-Lo, but more accessible to the average guy. The story is set in California, and the time frame spans from the 1940's through the 1950's. It's told from a guy's perspective and taps into a period when guys were guys and men were men, so to speak, Because of this, The Hanging Murders may appeal to men more than to women. That said, this is a fun, fast read that keeps you rooting for the good guy and hoping that he wins in the end.
